This communication first reports a Staphylococcus delphini strain (DSM 20771 - ATCC 49171) to produce β-haemolysin; production of the mentioned lytic compound in this coagulase-positive species, in fact, has been labeled as undetermined, thus far. Through a CAMP-test, nevertheless, we showed that this organism may indeed release the lysin in the growth medium. Of course, a wider number of strains have to be studied to define whether production is constitutive (like in Staphylococcus pseudintermedius), or strain-dependent (like in Staphylococcus aureus), which regulation mechanism it relies on, and what clinical impact it has; anyway, we can state that the S. delphini strain studied indeed produces β-haemolysin.
